Most individuals have bowel movements at regular intervals, and although the frequency varies from person to person, stools should pass without significant straining or discomfort. Functional constipation is a term used to describe a condition in which patients have hard, infrequent bowel movements that are often difficult or painful to pass. Functional constipation does not result from an identifiable anatomic abnormality or disease process and is a diagnosis of exclusion. This activity reviews functional constipation in children and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in the care of affected children.Clinicians will gain insights into the multifactorial nature of functional constipation, exploring contributing factors such as environmental conditions, stress, diet, coping skills, and social support. This activity underscores the importance of diagnosing functional constipation as a condition of exclusion, ruling out underlying organic causes, which account for only about 5% of cases. Participants will enhance their knowledge and skills in assessing, diagnosing, and managing pediatric functional constipation, ultimately improving the quality of care provided to affected children.
