PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Pediatric open airway surgery was popularized in the 1970s, utilizing laryngotracheoplasty to repair subglottic stenosis. Open airway surgerycontinues to evolve, and this course seeks to familiarize the audience with patient selection for open vs endoscopic surgery, and pre-operativeevaluation and optimization. Specific operations to be discussed include laryngotracheal reconstruction, cricotracheal resection, slidetracheoplasty, laryngeal cleft repair, and revision surgery. Specific pathologies discussed will include subglottic stenosis, transglottic stenosis, tracheal stenosis, complete tracheal rings, laryngeal webs and subglottic hemangiomas. Both single stage and double stage techniques, as wellas differing stenting methods will also be discussed. Each year we discuss a few specific pathologies, and rotate these each year. This is part of a two part series to cover all the topics in enough depth and detail. This is the companion course to “Pediatric Endoscopic Airway Surgery: State of the Art”OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Understand the best candidates for open vs endoscopic airway reconstructionOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Be able to describe pre-operative evaluation and patient optimization prior to open airway surgeryOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Be able to describe the risks, benefits, complications, and expected outcomes of specific techniques in pediatric open airwayBACKGROUND STATEMENT: This course was initiated by Robin Cotton over 35 years ago, and has remained extremely popular. Our Course evaluation scores have beenconsistently high. The course is adapted each year. It is the companion course to “Pediatric Endoscopic Airway Surgery: State of the Art”
