Pediatric Open Airway Surgery: State of the Art, Part 1 (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Pediatric open airway surgery was popularized in the 1970s, utilizing laryngotracheoplasty to repair subglottic stenosis. Open airway surgerycontinues to evolve, and this course seeks to familiarize the audience with patient selection for open vs endoscopic surgery, and pre-operativeevaluation and optimization. Specific operations to be discussed include laryngotracheal reconstruction, cricotracheal resection, slidetracheoplasty, laryngeal cleft repair, and revision surgery. Specific pathologies discussed will include subglottic stenosis, transglottic stenosis,tracheal stenosis, complete tracheal rings, laryngeal webs and subglottic hemangiomas. Both single stage and double stage techniques, as wellas differing stenting methods will also be discussed. Each year we discuss a few specific pathologies, and rotate these each year.In the second hour we will address complications, management of complications, longterm followup, single vs. double stage decision makingThis is the companion course to “Pediatric Endoscopic Airway Surgery: State of the Art”OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Demonstrate and understanding of the complications related to specific open airway surgeriesOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Recognize the difference between single stage and double stage operations and understand when to use one vs. the other.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Recognize the importance of longterm airway followup such as airway endoscopy, exercise intolerance, pfts, imaging, voice and swallowingissues.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: This course was initiated by Robin Cotton over 35 years ago, and has remained extremely popular.
