Peroneal Nerve Injury

Peroneal Nerve Injury

The common peroneal nerve is a major nerve that innervates the lower extremity. There are numerous traumatic and nontraumatic causes of peroneal nerve injuries. These include knee dislocation, direct impact or cut on the fibular neck, and proximal fibula fracture. Or the result of an injury due to compression, such as a tight plaster cast or compression wrapping. Even prolonged bed rest and regular crossing of the legs can lead to an injury. Peroneal nerve injury is typically managed conservatively. The resultant foot drop is treated with an AFO (ankle foot orthotic) from orthotics and physical therapy. Electromyography can help determine if it is a nerve or a root injury. Electrical stimulation of the anterior tibialis may also assist in recovery. However, there are also surgical options for more severe cases. This activity discusses the evaluation and treatment of peroneal nerve injuries and highlights the role of an interprofessional team in evaluating, treating, and managing patients with this injury.
