The FMA is committed to providing physicians with professional development and educational opportunities that will strengthen their ability to succeed and thrive in whatever professional setting they choose to practice within. Today’s healthcare professionals are facing unprecedented organizational, cultural, and professional changes and challenges. With this in mind, the FMA has collaborated with a variety of experts to develop a series of online courses intended to support not only the leadership skills of Florida physicians, but also their wellness goals. This particular module, which is the third in a series of four modules on Physician Wellness, is co-presented by two experts, an FMA physician/graduate of the Karl M. Altenburger, MD Physician Leadership Academy and a psychologist. The intent of the conversational dialogue is to equip learners with practical information and actionable steps physicians can take to achieve strengthened professional satisfaction and establish a more beneficial workplace. This module continues the focus on a psychology-based approach, but with an emphasis on specific techniques to strengthen patient relationships and preserve quality care. Overall the goal is to share psychological approaches that physicians can apply in their day-to-day work with patients to improve relations and counter factors that drive burnout and negatively impact the physician-patient encounter. Course Objectives: As a result of participating in this activity, participants should be able to: Identify how physician distress and burnout impact patient relationships Recognize indicators of professional overload and emotional exhaustion Distinguish between vicarious trauma and burnout Employ psychological techniques to respond to and manage emotional stress Manage unrealistic expectations and respond more effectively to to unreasonable patient demands Consider the role that motivational interviewing might play in their encounters with patients Identify ways to manage especially difficult patients and responding to inappropriate comments Implement strategies to cope with bad outcomes and deal with malpractice suits
