Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

Posterior Tibial Tendon Dysfunction

Posterior tibial tendon dysfunction (PTTD), now known as progressive collapsing foot deformity (PCFD), is an acquired, progressive condition affecting the foot and ankle, most commonly seen in middle-aged individuals. PTTD is the leading cause of adult-acquired flatfoot deformity. The multifactorial etiology of the disorder is associated with age-related degeneration, genetics, and other contributing factors such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, previous trauma, or steroid exposure. The disease results in posterior tibial tendon failure, affecting surrounding ligaments and eventually causing bony deformities.Evaluation of PCFD is primarily based on acquiring a detailed medical history and conducting a thorough physical examination. Imaging will assist in determining the severity of the disease. Treatment for PCFD usually commences with conservative approaches, although surgical options are considered for more severe cases based on the severity of the disease. This activity outlines the pathophysiology, evaluation, and treatment of PCFD, highlighting the role of the interprofessional healthcare team in treating patients with this condition. This activity underscores that PCFD can significantly impair mobility and cause considerable pain and weakness, emphasizing the necessity of a collaborative effort for effective management.
