The fogging procedure is performed during refraction to control accommodation and elicit hidden or latent hyperopia. Proper accommodation control is possibly the most critical factor in the refraction process. Fogging involves a plus power build-up to reduce visual acuity, followed by a stepwise reduction in plus power until there is no further improvement in vision. Fogging is effective irrespective of the inherent refractive state of the eye. This activity reviews the indications, contraindications, procedural technique, and commonly encountered errors of the fogging procedure. The activity also highlights the role of the interprofessional team in caring for patients with refractive errors.
