Psychotropic Medication Management in Primary Care

Psychotropic Medication Management in Primary Care

Four out of five prescriptions for psychotropic medications in the US are prescribed by primary care providers (PCPs). Psychotropic medications have a relatively high rate of adverse side effects, and are an increasing source of claims for medical malpractice. Clinical practice guidelines can assist PCPs to define their policies on whether and when to screen for depression, what medications and conditions they will manage, when they will refer to a psychiatrist and how to economically document advising the patient of the risks and benefits. This activity will provide an overview of prescribing patterns and how to reduce the risk of adverse events and claims.
