Pulmonary Contusion

Pulmonary Contusion

A pulmonary contusion is a lung parenchymal injury without lung or vascular lacerations. The condition usually results from blunt chest trauma, shock waves from penetrating chest injuries, or explosions, though its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. This traumatic lung injury results in impaired gas exchange, arteriovenous shunting, and decreased lung compliance, possibly leading to respiratory failure and death. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance the learners’ skills in evaluating patients with pulmonary contusions and managing the condition. This activity is designed to hone the learners’ competence when caring for patients with pulmonary contusions as part of a multidisciplinary team.
