Pulmonary hamartomas are benign lung malformations characterized by an abnormal mix of tissue components such as cartilage, epithelium, fat, and muscle. Despite comprising elements typical of lung tissue, the organ architecture within these lesions is not preserved. These tumors can occur in various body regions, including the lungs, skin, heart, and breast, with pulmonary hamartomas being the most common benign lung tumors in adults. Often discovered incidentally during imaging due to their asymptomatic nature and slow growth, they appear as well-defined, round, or lobulated structures on chest imaging, typically less than 3 cm in diameter, and are often located in peripheral lung tissue. When symptomatic, patients may experience persistent coughing, wheezing, dyspnea, hemoptysis, rhonchi, increased susceptibility to pneumonia, atelectasis, or pneumothorax, with endobronchial hamartomas posing a risk of airway obstruction. Diagnosis usually involves imaging techniques, and treatment typically involves surgical resection, with more extensive procedures like lobectomy, sleeve resection, or pneumonectomy required for larger or multiple lesions.Participants in this educational activity gain enhanced competence in diagnosing pulmonary hamartomas, performing the recommended evaluations, and implementing appropriate management strategies. The course emphasizes the importance of utilizing imaging techniques for diagnosis and understanding the indications for various surgical interventions. Additionally, participants learn the value of an interprofessional approach, which involves collaboration among pulmonologists, radiologists, pathologists, and thoracic surgeons to ensure comprehensive patient care. This collaborative effort enhances patient outcomes by ensuring accurate diagnosis, appropriate treatment planning, and effective management of any complications, ultimately leading to improved quality of life for patients with pulmonary hamartomas.
