Reinke edema, or polypoid corditis, is a benign disorder of the vocal folds commonly resulting in symptomatic dysphonia that may result in dyspnea when severe. Reinke edema is most commonly secondary to cigarette smoking and is most prevalent in females. A thorough evaluation for other potential causes of dysphonia is critical to ensure no malignant diagnoses are missed. Treatment of Reinke edema is frequently multimodal, anchored on speech-language pathology, smoking cessation, and surgical management. Surgical management is dictated by the clinician’s expertise and available equipment and may be office-based or performed in the operating room. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of Reinke edema and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in improving care for patients with this benign condition.
