Resilience University: Offsetting the Impact of Toxic Stress in Primary Care

An intervention you can offer families and patients within the context of existing primary care
structure to help them foster healthy coping skills and protective positive childhood experiences
with meaningful responses to adversity.
Objectives:
• Summarize current research in ACEs, PCEs and toxic stress in the context of child
development using the ecobiodevelopmental model of disease and wellness
• Illustrate how to discuss and promote evidence-based interventions to offset toxic stress
in a standardized format within the existing context of primary care
• Incorporate brief “first aid” strategies for toxic stress into anticipatory guidance
• Build confidence in teaching healthy coping skills to parents and children including
meditation, breathing exercises, mindfulness, positive parenting
• Build confidence using PDSA cycles to help families integrate these into their family
culture
