The 2022 Clinical Practice Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Pain, developed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was introduced as an update to the 2016 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain. This update aimed to bridge practice gaps and correct misapplication of the 2016 guideline that resulted in patient harm. Unfortunately, interpretation and misapplication of the recommendations have posed challenges to patient-clinician relationships and has widened gaps of inequitable access to pain management solutions, reminding us that there are no short cuts to safer opioid prescribing. This CMEO digital monograph serves to highlight an educational activity focused on the 2022 CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain, changes made since the last Guideline published in 2016, and ways to utilize the new Guideline in the management of pain. Emphasis will be on the need to individualize treatment to the needs of the patient, use of multi-modal pain management strategies, understanding the different pain pathways and biopsychosocial factors individual patients face trying to manage pain.
