Rheumatic Manifestations of Metabolic Disease

Rheumatic Manifestations of Metabolic Disease

Metabolic diseases often have rheumatological manifestations, which are frequently underestimated. These conditions lead to clinical confusion and pose a diagnostic challenge due to potential similarities between endocrine diseases and autoimmune conditions. Notably, diabetes, thyroid diseases, parathyroid diseases, and hemochromatosis are metabolic disorders commonly associated with rheumatological manifestations. The pathogenesis of these manifestations often involves metabolic dysregulation, inflammation, and altered biomechanical stress on joints. Accurate diagnosis is crucial, necessitating a combination of clinical evaluation and various diagnostic modalities to distinguish between primary rheumatic diseases and those secondary to metabolic disorders. Management strategies typically involve an interprofessional approach, focusing on metabolic control through lifestyle modifications, pharmacotherapy, and symptomatic relief for rheumatic symptoms.Participants in this course gain a broader grasp of the epidemiology, etiology, pathology, clinical presentations, and differential diagnosis of metabolic diseases with rheumatological manifestations, equipping them with knowledge and tools to enhance patient care for this complex association. This activity also explores the current correlation between these conditions, emphasizing the role of an interprofessional care team in early detection and referral for appropriate intervention.
