Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty is one of the most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the United States, with tens of thousands of cases completed annually. Indications run the gamut from purely cosmetic to exclusively reconstructive, with most patients having a combination of aesthetic and functional motivations. The procedure itself can be very complicated, particularly in revision cases, and a deep understanding of nasal anatomy, physiology, and surgical technique is essential for producing satisfactory results. Nasal analysis is especially critical for informing operative decision-making, as is elucidation of patient goals and expectations before surgery. This activity reviews the key components of the history, physical examination, and preoperative counseling. An overview of rhinoplasty techniques and an algorithmic approach to employing them is also presented. Additionally, this activity details the most common complications that occur after rhinoplasty and discusses appropriate management. The roles the interprofessional team members play in providing care to rhinoplasty patients before, during, and after surgery are described, empowering team members to collaborate and optimize surgical outcomes while reducing complications.
