Risks & Liabilities in Labor: Obstetric Management Essentials

Risks & Liabilities in Labor: Obstetric Management Essentials

The Obstetrics department of a hospital provides a wide spectrum of care to pregnant and postpartum women. This course highlights the aspects of maternity care that carry high stakes for patient care outcomes from both a quality and safety viewpoint and for risk of medical liability claims.

In this activity, we present best practice methods for the triage of pregnant and postpartum women presenting to a medical center for care. Instructions are provided regarding provision of care following a staging system of acuity for optimal, timely care. The importance of communication tools for transfer of care between medical care providers and locations are discussed. Legal considerations for care of patients in the triage setting are outlined. Normal and abnormal labor patterns, fetal heart rate patterns and best practice methods for induction of labor are discussed in detail. Provision of quality surgical care to pregnant women in the operating room is presented, as well as recommendations for prevention of postoperative complications such as infections and venous thromboembolism. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: classify pregnant and postpartum women into appropriate triage categories based upon acuity of presenting complaints; implement recommendations for induction of labor; identify normal and abnormal labor patterns; define specific criteria for each fetal heart rate category; and identify best practice methods of care for patients undergoing surgery in Labor & Delivery.
