The purpose of this live virtual training series is to increase Primary Care providers knowledge, exposure, and interactions with Specialty Care providers and areas of focus and expertise at the San Francisco VA Health Care System (SFVAHCS). By providing this ongoing training series opportunity to Primary Care providers, especially the Primary Care providers who are located in our Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), we will increase knowledge, interactions, and consultations between SFVAHCS Primary Care providers and SFVAHCS Specialty Care providers, for the improved management and care of the multitude of conditions experienced by veterans we all serve, regardless of the geographic proximity to the majority of our Specialty Care providers, who are primarily located at our main medical center location (Fort Miley). Veterans who live in distant and remote areas comprise approximately 50% of the population served by the SFVAHCS, which outpaces the rurality score of average Americans. Many of these rural veterans are over 70 and have significant co-morbidities. As evidenced by many studies and summarized by the CDC, health outcomes of rural patients are significantly worse than those living in urban areas. Per the CDC rural Americans are more likely to die from heart disease, cancer, unintentional injury, chronic lower respiratory disease, and stroke than their urban counterparts . Many rural areas are losing access to specialty care providers and wait times for specialists may be significantly longer than in urban areas or within the SFVAHCS
