In 2020, there were 6,146 Veteran suicides, which averages to 16.8 Veteran Suicides per day. Research shows that Medical and Mental Health providers in general have limited suicide risk assessment and intervention training in graduate level education programs. Less than 25% of a national sample of social workers reported receiving any training in suicide prevention; the majority reported that their training had been inadequate. (Source: Schmitz, W. (2012). Not only that, but 71% of Veterans die by suicide via firearm. It is important to provide training not only to allow providers to feel more comfortable talking about suicide but also to help provide the health care team support, safety, and lethal means counseling for Veterans who are suicidal and needing care. The purpose of this knowledge-based, live virtual and face-to-face training; is to share information on suicide screening data about suicide, warning signs and risk factors for suicide, how to document incidents, and engage with case examples and scenarios. The goal of this training series is to increase awareness and education regarding suicide prevention efforts as well as provide the interprofessional healthcare team with interventions aimed at reducing risk factors and improving protective factors.
