Shoulder Arthrocentesis Technique

Shoulder Arthrocentesis Technique

Shoulder arthrocentesis, also known as shoulder aspiration, is an important skill for interprofessional team members. It can be used for both diagnostic and therapeutic indications. A few of the indications for shoulder arthrocentesis include acquiring synovial fluid to aid in the diagnosis of inflammatory or septic arthritis, the differentiation of infection from gout or pseudogout, and traumatic hemarthrosis. This activity reviews the indications, contraindications, and techniques involved in performing shoulder arthrocentesis and highlights the interprofessional team’s role in the care of patients undergoing shoulder arthrocentesis.
