This course takes the clinician through the entire spectrum of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) recognition and management concerns, focusing on community-acquired bacterial infections. Beginning with a comprehensive review of the clinical approach to SSTI recognition, including how to assess for less common but important pathogens that lead to a change in treatment, this activity uses cases to emphasize practical clinical points for SSTI management. Topics include common conditions that mimic SSTI and how to recognize them; how to approach limb and life-threatening SSTI including early recognition and critical steps in initial care; nuances of antimicrobial management including choice of agent and duration of therapy; and ending with what is arguably the most underappreciated aspect of SSTI clinical care – how to care for individuals with recurrent SSTIs.
Presented by Continuing Education Company (CEC), our Infectious Disease Series is comprised of self-paced online courses designed to update primary care clinicians. This CME activity will enable clinicians to be better prepared to manage the spectrum of bacterial SSTI encountered in clinical practice and focuses on greater precision in differentiating SSTI from conditions that masquerade, test utilization, and antimicrobial prescribing. Content will be presented in a variety of engaging formats including video lectures, PowerPoint slides, and detailed lecture summaries.
Learning Objectives:
As a result of this educational activity, participants should be better able to:
Demonstrate improved recognition of bacterial skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) subcategories.
Recognize the impact of SSTI misdiagnosis and demonstrate a comprehensive approach to the conditions that mimic bacterial SSTI.
Describe the importance of lymphedema recognition and management.
Recognize the impact of interrupting the cycle of recurrent soft tissue infections.
