This lecture will provide an update on common sleep disorders: insomnia, REM Sleep Behavior Disorder (RBD), restless leg syndrome (RLS), narcolepsy, and sleep apnea. The causes, effects, and treatments for these common sleep disorders will be reviewed and discussed.
Objectives: At the conclusion of the lecture, learners will be able to:
1) List the causes of sleepiness in specific patient populations most likely to be encountered in primary care practice as well as by specialists in family medicine, primary care, psychiatry, neurology, pediatrics, and geriatrics medicine.
2) Identify and recognize signs and symptoms of common sleep disorders.
3) Analyze and apply the knowledge gained in diagnosing and treating common sleep disorders to improve patient outcomes.
4) Formulate a practical approach for the management of the major sleep disorders in adults, including insomnia, abnormal motor activity during sleep, restless leg syndrome, and parasomnias such as REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD).
5) Discuss the evaluation and management of sleep-disordered breathing.
