This activity is a presentation done by PGY1 Health-Systems Pharmacy Administration and Leadership (HSPAL) resident, Ethan Robarts, in coordination with the University of Texas College of Pharmacy. The topic presented is a review of pharmacists role in addressing social determinants of health (SDOH). As defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), SDOH are the non-medical factors that influence health outcomes. They are the conditions in which people are born, grow, work, live, and age, and the wider set of forces and systems shaping the conditions of daily life. These forces and systems include economic policies and systems, development agendas, social norms, social policies and political systems. The presentation describes SDOH that commonly affect patients during healthcare encounters, explains strategies to recognize social risk factors in different patient populations, identifies ways in which clinicians can address SDOH in their everyday practice, and discusses strategies and available tools for frontline workers to confront SDOH. The presentation includes in-depth literature review, open-ended and multiple choice questions throughout to engage the audience, and numerous visual aids to highlight the importance of recognizing and addressing SDOH.
