A solitary pulmonary nodule (SPN) represents a discrete, rounded opacity within the lung parenchyma that is <3 cm in diameter and completely surrounded by lung parenchyma without associated lymphadenopathy, atelectasis, or pneumonia. These nodules are frequently incidentally detected on imaging studies performed for reasons unrelated to pulmonary disease. Even though most cases are benign, it is essential to determine the underlying cause because lung cancer is the leading cause of oncological death in the United States. The discovery of an SPN poses a diagnostic challenge due to its potential association with a spectrum of benign and malignant conditions, necessitating a systematic approach to evaluation and management to determine its nature and appropriate clinical intervention. This activity reviews the clinical significance of SPNs, differential diagnosis considerations, and evidence-based approaches to management. Key topics include imaging modalities for characterization, risk stratification models for malignancy, and current guidelines on follow-up and intervention strategies. This activity also highlights the interprofessional team’s role in managing patients with this finding. Participants are equipped with updated knowledge and the practical skills necessary to evaluate, manage, and monitor SPNs, thereby enhancing their clinical decision-making capabilities and improving patient care.
