The Aorta/IVC: Core Clinical Ultrasound Module begins with a discussion on abdominal aortic aneurisms and the role bedside ultrasound plays in their diagnosis. The course reviews sonographic evaluation of aortic anatomy and aortic imaging techniques. This is followed by multiple case studies on several pathologic conditions involving the abdominal aorta, including aneurysmal dilatation of the aorta, aortic aneurysm leakage, aortic dissection, and mural thrombus. Estimating central venous pressure (CVP) using inferior vena cava (IVC) diameter is discussed next. Sonographic evaluation of IVC anatomy is detailed, and IVC imaging techniques are presented. The course concludes with imaging tips and a summary of salient teaching points. One is able to develop the requisite cognitive task awareness and visuospatial skills required to perform sonographic evaluations of the aorta and IVC through 20 different hands-on simulation cases.
