The Fundamentals: Core Clinical Ultrasound Module reviews the fundamentals of ultrasonography, beginning with the basic physics of the interaction between sound waves and human tissue. Different types of transducers are discussed, including their frequencies and footprints. Ultrasound imaging conventions and artifacts (classified as attenuation, propagation, and Doppler artifacts) are introduced. Ultrasound imaging modes and their appropriate usages are presented, including B-mode, M-mode, color-flow Doppler, power-flow Doppler, and pulsed-wave Doppler. Doppler-mode imaging is then reviewed in detail. Finally, the basics of ultrasound system operation and the adjustments that can be made are presented. The course concludes with general considerations (such as transducer disinfection and ultrasound bioeffects) and a summary of salient teaching points. One can develop the visuospatial skills required to perform sonographic evaluations through 10 different Skill Box simulation cases that teach the basic principles of ultrasound.
