PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The use of steroids are common in many otolaryngology disorders. However, these medications need to be carefully considered given potential short and long-term side effects. The mechanism of action of steroids and the risks associated with this medication are often not well recognized. In many cases the use of steroids for many conditions are based on limited data. This Expert Series will review the pharmacology of steroids, risks associated with use, and recommendations for dosing. We will then provide evidence based data supporting or refuting the use of steroids in the most commonly encountered conditions in an otolaryngology practice.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: Understand the basic physiology of corticosteroids and the potential complications of their use.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: Review the pertinent literature concerning the use of steroids in otolaryngology.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: Help the practitioner develop a strategy for safe steroid use.BACKGROUND STATEMENT: The evidence for use of steroids in specific conditions is updated every year; recommendations for proper use of steroids along with risk consideration is valuable for patient management.
