Strokes, whether new or recurrent, affect about 700,000 Americans every year. Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States and the number one cause of adult disability. With more than a million hospitalizations occurring in the U.S. each year, the importance of stroke as a major cause of morbidity and mortality cannot be overemphasized. Medical errors in this high-risk area may lead to profound disability or death. In addition, lawsuits in this arena are often exceptionally costly. Primary prevention strategies that address the patients risk factors, such as high blood pressure, smoking, atrial fibrillation, and diabetes, can considerably reduce the risk of stroke. Once a patient suffers a stroke, early treatment can help minimize damage to the brain tissue and may improve the outcome. A thorough knowledge of pharmacology and its application to the stroke patient is paramount to safety and quality. In this activity, we inform healthcare providers/team members about recommended pharmacological strategies for the treatment of acute stroke and post-stroke phases. We include a comprehensive discussion of the use of thrombolytic administration for the stroke patient. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: integrate awareness of the common medical errors and reasons for litigation related to transient ischemic attack (TIA) and stroke into clinical practice to improve patient safety, improve documentation, and decrease the risk of exposure to medical malpractice; apply an understanding of the pharmacologic management of TIA to clinical practice to reduce the incidence of subsequent stroke; and assess the current indications and contraindications for the use of thrombolytic agents in the management of stroke patients.
