Subclavian Artery Thrombosis

Subclavian Artery Thrombosis

Subclavian artery thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot within the subclavian artery, causing circulatory obstruction within the vessel’s distribution area. Complete stenosis from subclavian artery thrombosis is a medical emergency, as it can lead to limb loss and stroke if not treated promptly. This condition is common yet underdiagnosed, occurring 4 times more frequently on the left than on the right. The compromised blood flow can lead to significant ischemia in the ipsilateral upper limb, brain, and, occasionally, the heart. Diagnosis of subclavian artery thrombosis typically involves a combination of clinical evaluation and imaging studies such as Doppler ultrasound, computed tomography angiography, or magnetic resonance angiography. Treatment aims to restore blood flow through the affected artery and prevent complications. This activity for healthcare workers enhances learners’ proficiency in evaluating and managing subclavian artery thrombosis. After participation, learners improve their recognition of the signs and symptoms of this condition, refine their skills in selecting and interpreting appropriate diagnostic tests, and gain insights into evidence-based treatment options. Participants become equipped with the skills to collaborate seamlessly with an interprofessional team caring for patients with subclavian artery thrombosis.
