Sudden Cardiac Death

Sudden Cardiac Death

Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is death due to a cardiovascular or unidentifiable cause that occurs within an hour of the onset of symptoms. Death occurs when the heart stops beating or is not beating sufficiently to maintain perfusion and life. Those who have experienced sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) have a higher risk of SCD. Thus, addressing SCA risk factors reduces SCD risk. Since SCD is a high-risk condition, emergency clinicians are often the first professionals to see a patient. However, primary care physicians can prevent SCA and SCD through counseling about healthy lifestyle changes, regular health monitoring, and treatment adherence. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to improve learners’ proficiency in evaluating and managing SCD. Participants gain a broader grasp of SCD risk factors and evidence-based preventive and treatment strategies. Learners enhance their cardiac diagnostic and management skills to effectively collaborate within an interprofessional team caring for patients at risk of SCD.
