Suicide is a serious health problem. Although most suicide attempts happen outside the hospital setting, some do occur while a person is a patient in a facility. When this happens, it is considered a reportable Sentinel Event by the Joint Commission—a serious, and preventable incident. This activity will focus on ways physicians, nurses, healthcare staff, and hospitals can identify and care for patients at risk of suicide, keeping them safe and helping them to obtain appropriate treatment and support.
