Superficial Siderosis

Superficial Siderosis

Superficial siderosis is a rare neurological disorder characterized by iron deposition in the superficial layers of the brain and spinal cord. This condition typically arises from chronic bleeding into the subarachnoid space, often due to previous head or spinal trauma, tumors, or vascular malformations. As iron accumulates over time, it damages nerve tissues, leading to a spectrum of symptoms ranging from progressive hearing loss and imbalance to cognitive decline and neurological deficits. Despite its rarity, superficial siderosis presents a diagnostic challenge, often mimicking other more common neurological conditions. Understanding its pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and management strategies is essential for early recognition and intervention to improve patient outcomes. This course explores the current knowledge of the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic challenges, and management strategies associated with superficial siderosis. Participants gain valuable insights into the underlying causes of chronic bleeding into the subarachnoid space, the spectrum of symptoms exhibited by affected individuals, and the latest evidence-based approaches to diagnosis and treatment. The important role of an interprofessional healthcare team in managing patients with this complex condition is highlighted.
