Surgery: Risks in the Postoperative Phase

Surgery: Risks in the Postoperative Phase

The postoperative period is of tremendous importance for the success of the surgical procedure. This period involves the movement to and the stay in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), a stay in the ICU or on a medical/surgical floor, discharge from the facility, episodes of follow-up care, and discharge instructions. There have been many claims made for medical malpractice in which the surgery was performed appropriately but the patient suffered an adverse outcome in the postoperative period that was either not recognized or was not recognized and managed in a timely manner. It is imperative that attention is paid to detail in this period and that communications are clear. A successful surgery does not end when the patient’s wound is closed; it ends when the patient is restored to health.

In this activity, we review cases that address risk issues that occur after the surgical procedure is completed but before the patient has been released from care for the procedure, including errors that arise when communication patterns are defective. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: evaluate the symptoms and signs of complications associated with operative procedures; appraise postoperative lab and imaging results to insure accuracy and patient safety demonstrate the roles of empathy, communication, and appropriate disclosure to patients when an unanticipated outcome or error occurs.
