The period between the patient’s admission to the facility and the initiation of the surgical procedure is an important period in determining the outcome of the procedure. There are many important tasks to be undertaken and many decisions to be made in the preoperative period that may affect the ultimate outcome of the surgical procedure. Just as each patient is a unique individual, each patient also presents a unique spectrum of considerations to be evaluated before the procedure can begin.
In this activity, we review cases that demonstrate how the following can lead to adverse outcomes for patients: errors in the proper administration of prophylactic antibiotics; errors in designation of the correct surgical site(s); lack of confirmation that nothing of substance has changed in the patient’s medical condition since medical clearance was performed and failing to recognize and address any such changes; and errors in proper positioning of the patient for surgery. After completing this activity, practitioners should be able to: formulate a plan for the appropriate administration of prophylactic antibiotics; employ safeguards to avoid wrong-site surgery; and devise a preoperative assessment using available information in order to reduce the risk of avoidable complications.
