Many studies show using a surgical safety checklist improves surgical outcomes. In one survey of clinicians, over 90% of respondents said they would want a checklist used if they were undergoing surgery. However, researchers have recently identified resistance among surgeons and OR staff to checklist use, poor checklist compliance, and surgeon participation as problems. How can surgical teams better use the checklist as a vigorous patient safety and risk management tool? This activity presents some strategies to bolster the checklist s effectiveness.
