The temporal bone occupies a significant area in the lateral aspect of the cranial vault and the floor of the middle cranial fossa. The petrous pyramid, the densest bone in the body, lies within the temporal bone. Fractures of this bone require significant force, and such high-energy head injuries carry the risk of significant morbidity or mortality. Temporal bone fractures potentially cause brain trauma or hemorrhage. Additionally, major neurovascular structures traversing the temporal bone, including the internal carotid artery and multiple cranial nerves, can get damaged by such injuries. This activity reviews the most common causes of temporal bone fractures and outlines the approach to treatment.
