Obesity is emerging as a serious and complex health condition affecting about 1 billion people in the world. It is also an important independent risk factor for many serious comorbidities including Diabetes. This lecture will describe the epidemiology of obesity and diabetes, define the aetiopathogenesis and metabolic dysfunctions in obesity that leads to Diabetes, identify the differences of these processes between different racial groups and devise strategies of treating both DM and obesity in these different patient populations. By the end of the lecture, participants will be able to recognize the complex relationship of obesity and diabetes and gain confidence to analyze and formulate better strategies in treating obesity and diabetes in consideration of their patient s different racial and social backgrounds.
