This educational activity is focused on patients receiving parenteral nutrition with a focus on intravenous lipid emulsions (ILEs). It will cover how to select the appropriate dose of various ILEs to prevent essential fatty acid deficiency in adult and pediatric patients. Recent guidelines for provision of ILEs in preterm infants will be reviewed and the appropriate use of ILEs in pediatric/neonatal patients at risk for intestinal failure associated liver disease will be summarized, as well as the appropriate use of ILEs in hospital and home adult patients with comorbidities. At the end of the activity learners will be better prepared to achieve optimal outcomes for patients receiving ILEs.
