The Not So Silent Sinus Syndrome (2022 AMW)

Silent sinus syndrome (SSS) is a benign condition that is usually diagnosed in patients in their 30’s and 40’s. Patients typically have minimal sinonasal symptoms due to the relatively slow disease development over a long period of time. Due to this insidious process patients with SSS will have a variable presentation. The diagnosis of SSS is becoming more relevant in the otolaryngology field, with providers becoming more familiar with diagnosis and management. Treatment of SSS is an ever evolving field which includes a variety of different approaches and philosophies. Understanding the relevant sinonasal anatomy, especially with regard to the orbit which is at risk of injury during surgery, is paramount to performing safe and effective sinonasal surgery. Moreover, the panel will review the necessary pre-operative ophthalmologic evaluations and discuss the indications for placement of orbital implants. The panel of experts will use case presentations and surgical videos to review the pathophysiology of this condition and demonstrate surgical approaches in the management of silent sinus syndrome.
