The opioid epidemic and crisis have dominated the headlines for years now as the public, press and government agencies catch up to what is happening in homes and healthcare facilities across the country. Drug overdose is now the leading cause of accidental death in the U.S. The majority of overdose deaths involve opioids. Deaths involving synthetic opioids (largely illicitly made fentanyl) and stimulants (such as cocaine and methamphetamine) have increased in recent years. In addition, overdose deaths accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic. In this activity, we present an overview of the opioid crisis and discuss the impact of opioids on the economy and special populations. We cover trends and liabilities of opioid prescribing. Lastly, we review strategies to reduce harm, including use of non-opioid alternatives in patient treatment. After completing this activity, practitioners/members of the healthcare team should be able to: describe the current opioid epidemic; interpret the liabilities associated with opioid prescribing; and apply strategies to reduce harm from opioid prescribing and abuse.
