The Mayo Clinic Tobacco Treatment Specialist Certification Training consists of both online and a three-day on-site/Livestream training focusing on the skills needed to effectively treat tobacco dependence. This course is delivered through a blended learning format in which instruction is completed first online through the Brightspace platform. The course covers a variety of topics from motivational interviewing, assessment, pharmacotherapy, current trends, and special populations (pregnant and diverse). The training uses a lecture format as well as small group breakouts to give learners a space to practice these skills as they are learning. After completion of the course, they take the certification exam and complete 240 practice hours either in a clinic setting or using the content learned to develop new programs or train other staff.
