Tracheal Resection

Tracheal Resection

Tracheal resection is performed when tracheal stenosis is unresponsive to conservative management strategies, such as balloon dilation and scar excision. Tracheal resection and cricotracheal resection are 2 related surgical procedures that definitively address tracheal stenosis, depending on the location of the stenosis. Repair indications include symptomatic or progressive stenosis secondary to prolonged intubation, tracheostomy, tracheal tumors, airway trauma, tracheoesophageal fistula, tracheoinnominate fistulas, and idiopathic laryngotracheal stenosis. The procedure’s high success rate and relatively low complication rate establish it as the treatment mainstay for tracheal stenosis. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ competence in identifying indications for tracheal resection and performing the procedure. Participants gain a broader grasp of the procedure’s relevant anatomy and physiology, indications, contraindications, proper technique, and potential complications. Greater proficiency prepares learners to collaborate within an interprofessional team caring for patients with tracheal stenosis.
