Tracheoesophageal fistulas (TEFs) are among major pediatric surgical centers’ most common congenital anomalies. Infants with TEFs classically present with respiratory distress, feeding difficulties, choking, and risk of aspiration. Tracheoesophageal fistulas most commonly occur alongside other congenital anomalies, particularly cardiac defects. Early diagnosis of TEF is crucial for effective management and improved outcomes. Diagnostic techniques often include prenatal ultrasonography, which may show polyhydramnios or an absent stomach bubble, and postnatal radiographic studies, such as a chest x-ray with a nasogastric tube inserted to confirm the presence of a fistula. These diagnostic measures help to identify the specific type of TEF, as variations can significantly impact the clinical approach and prognosis. TEF management primarily involves surgical intervention to close the fistula and establish continuity of the esophagus. The timing of surgery depends on the infant’s condition and the presence of associated anomalies, such as cardiac defects. This activity for healthcare professionals is designed to enhance learners’ proficiency in evaluating and managing TEFs. Participants understand this condition’s pathogenesis, presentations, and evidence-based diagnostic and management strategies. Greater competence equips learners to collaborate within an interprofessional team caring for patients with TEF to enhance outcomes.
