Trachoma is a debilitating eye disease caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis bacterium and is one of the leading causes of blindness worldwide. Trachoma predominantly affects the conjunctiva, and the infection results in inflammation, roughening, and scarring of the inner surface of the eyelids, along with erosion of the corneal surface. Transmission occurs through various means, including direct contact, hand-eye contact, contact with contaminated objects (fomites), and eye-seeking flies. Early diagnosis and preventive screening measures are essential. If the condition is left untreated, ocular complications can progress to blindness. Various initiatives, including screening and hygiene education programs, have been initiated worldwide to limit and eradicate trachoma, especially in underdeveloped countries. Essential interventions for at-risk patients include preventive and empirical antibiotic treatment, adequate patient assessment, and surgical solutions for ocular complications. In addition, several strategies such as facial cleanliness, environmental improvements to sanitation, clean drinking water, and control of flies are important to prevent this pervasive and severe ocular disease and optimize patient outcomes. This activity comprehensively reviews the characteristics of trachoma and delineates its evaluation and management protocols. This activity also highlights the crucial role of the interprofessional healthcare team and provides them with the necessary knowledge and tools to enhance patient care and optimize outcomes for this widespread condition.
