Transition to Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) in Otolaryngology (AMW2023)

Transition to Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) in Otolaryngology (AMW2023)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Current Otolaryngology training models in the United States are often unstructured and time-based. They lack emphasis on ACGME-recommended entrustable professional activities (EPAs) and Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME), meant to objectively ensure trainees possess specialty-specific knowledge and can competently perform specialty-specific skills prior to graduation. This is in contrast to the standard 5-year model supported only by case logs and unstandardized feedback, which may be prone to bias. This program aims to explore the foundations of CBME, reasons for the important shift towards CBME, and the current steps that are being taken to standardize Otolaryngology curriculums. There will be a focus on what residents and programs can expect in the years to come regarding both residency education and assessment.OUTCOME OBJECTIVE 1: 1. Understand the basics of CBME and application to surgical trainingOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 2: 2. Recognize the global shift towards CBME and learn from international colleagues implementation experienceOUTCOME OBJECTIVE 3: 3. Appreciate the steps towards standardization of Otolaryngology curriculumsBACKGROUND STATEMENT: There is a need for basic understanding of the shift towards Competency-Based Medical Education and how this impacts Otolaryngology training, particularly given COVID-19 disruptions in training. This panel submission is sponsored by the Section for Residents and Fellows (SRF).
