Ultrasound biometry is one of the most reliable methods of measuring the axial length and calculating the intraocular lens (IOL) power. Another option for measuring axial length is optical biometry. This activity outlines the value of ultrasound biometry and different techniques for performing the procedure (applanation and immersion). Relevant eye conditions are highlighted under ultrasound biometry, including imaging guidelines. Newer modalities and their relationship with ultrasound biometry are also discussed. Interprofessional teamwork involves optometrists, ophthalmic technicians, nurses, and ophthalmologists taking the ideal scan and interpreting it as needed. This procedure is most critical to optimize outcomes in cataract surgery.
