Vasoplegic syndrome (VPS) is an uncommon but life-threatening condition characterized by uncontrolled peripheral vasodilation. With mortality rates as high as 25%, the urgency of identifying and treating VPS is crucial for healthcare professionals to provide patients with immediate outcomes. This activity reviews the etiology, risk factors, prolonged cardiopulmonary bypass, aortic cross-clamp time, and medications such as ACE inhibitors when treating VPS.Participating clinicians will gain insights into the pathophysiology, including the “sterile” inflammatory response and cascade leading to vasodilation. Clinicians also review non-catecholamine therapies such as vasopressin, methylene blue, hydroxocobalamin, angiotensin II, and ascorbic acid through a collaborative approach involving anesthesiologists, critical care clinicians, nurses, and pharmacists. The interprofessional team may best deploy non-catecholamine interventions when catecholamines are ineffective, enhancing patient outcomes.
