The goal of this program is to improve management of patients requiring emergency ventilation and use of mechan ical ventilation in the emergency department. After hearing and assimilating this program, the clinician will be better able to: 1. Choose an appropriate approach to airway management for adults in respiratory distress due to epiglottitis. 2. Ventilate a patient who has had dislodgment of a newly placed tracheostomy tube. 3. Treat pediatric partial airway obstruction. 4. Optimize mechanical ventilation settings in the emer gency department. 5. Use pressure-volume curves on the ventilator to deter mine whether the lungs are appropriately distended.
