WHO System for Reporting Pancreaticobiliary Cytology: An Overview

WHO System for Reporting Pancreaticobiliary Cytology: An Overview

The World Health Organization (WHO) with expert contributors from around the world, have presented an international approach to standardized reporting of pancreaticobiliary cytopathology. It revises the Papanicolaou Society of Cytopathology System for Reporting Pancreaticobiliary Cytology published in 2015 and replaces the six-tiered system with a seven-tiered system. Each of the individual reporting tiers has been elaborated in detail. The WHO system advocates for a close correlation with imaging and encourages incorporation of ancillary testing into the final diagnosis, such as biochemical and molecular testing. This overview will be a helpful update for reporting the current practice of reporting pancreaticobiliary cytopathology.
