Psychological, physical, and sexual forms of intimate partner violence (IPV) are all-to-common experiences for women Veterans, but mental health clinicians often report limited knowledge about IPV and best clinical practices. The purpose of this recording of a live, knowledge-based virtual training is to provide VHA clinicians with the knowledge and skills to enhance their confidence and ability to address IPV in treatment with women Veterans. The presenters will highlight recent research on IPV among women Veterans and introduce a new brief counseling intervention that is effective for enhancing psychosocial health among women Veterans— Recovering from IPV through Strengths and Empowerment (RISE). Rooted in principles of empowerment and trauma-informed care, RISE is an individualized, variable-length, and modular-based intervention that addresses key topic areas in IPV care (e.g., safety planning, health effects and warning signs of IPV, and sexual violence considerations). Clinical examples will demonstrate how mental health clinicians can incorporate RISE principles and strategies into case conceptualization and treatment planning for women Veterans who experience IPV.
