Work-Life Integration: Awareness, Accountability, and Actions to Live in Alignment with Your Core Values (2022 AMW)

Work-life integration is a new updated term that has replaced ‘work-life balance” given balance is not realistic especially for physician/surgeons and our ever increasing work demand. The integration of all aspects of our “self” in our daily presence at work, outside of work, in every activity, relationship, and in how we “show up” for ourselves in our lives is critical. Practicing physicians and trainees continue to be a high risk of burnout, despite a “successful” career by historical measures, in our current reality of financial and business culture of health care delivery and perpetuated tendency for “self-sacrifice” as absolute definition of being a “good physician”. This session will focus on authentic discussion and reflection on the challenge and lack of formal training on how to separate work from non-work life, manage emotions of guilt, shame, anxiety, and compulsion to work more at the expense of health and critical relationships. Panelists will share personal experiences, challenges, actions that helped achieve experience of better integration against external and internal expectations. Amidst ongoing pandemic, work life integration is even more important to mitigate negative consequences to individual physicians. Instead of struggling with internal conflicts amongst various “roles” each of us live, this session aims to help attendees understand how to integrate the simultaneous “roles” without pressure to “perfect” each role. Presenters will share actions that support being radically present in each role as we transition multiple times daily across roles and responsibilities.
